Needs Assessment Results

Needs Assessment for Schonsee Park & Playground 2013 / 2014

  • In December 2013, we went door to door in the Schonsee neighbourhood to conduct a survey to see what the residents wanted for the park and playground space. This survey is called the “Needs Assessment”.  It established the “Need” of the community from the community members.  It ensures that we design a park based on the community’s wishes.  We gave residents the option to complete the survey with us while we were there, or to complete the survey online. Residents that were not home were left a letter with an online link to the survey in their door or mailbox. We were able to gather information from 113 residents. The needs assessment was completed in summer of 2014.

The following are the top  choices that people voted on what they would like to see incorporated in the Schonsee Park and Playground.

  • 1. Playground equipment for ages 6-12 and playground equipment for preschool (Ranked high with this as well were picnic tables, and garbage cans.
  • 2. Sledding hill(s)
  • 3. Shelter (covers over picnic tables and bench)
  • 4. Spray deck (water play)

From this Needs Assessment result we were able to establish Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 1– Playground equipment for ages 6-12 and playground equipment for preschool (Ranked high in this survey as well was rubber surfacing, picnic tables, and garbage cans).

Phase 2- Shelter and a Spray deck. Like mentioned above, our group has not committed to this phase yet and we will be looking for people to volunteer and take this on.

Here are the complete results from the Needs Assessment Survey we did in 2013 for what people voted on.   It tells us a committee what Schonsee residents would like fund raised at Schonsee Park & Playground.

Pie ChartUpdate:

We have currently completed Phase 1 which included additions of sledding hill, gazebo, garbage cans, picnic tables and a bike rack.

Public Engagement Needs Assessment for Schonsee Park & Playground Phase 2 – July 2018

  • Since we started to develop our park in partnership with the City of Edmonton in 2013, even more families have moved into our neighbourhood, so in July 2018 the committee had decided to do a new “Community Outreach Needs Assessment Survey”.
  • We went door to door in the Schonsee neighbourhood to make sure we knew what the residents wanted for the park and playground space for Phase 2. We gave residents the option to complete the survey with us while we were there, or to complete the survey online through our Facebook page and website. An email was also sent to all the residence on our email address list. We were able to gather information from 140 residents. The Community Outreach Needs Assessment Survey was completed in July of 2018.

The following are the top  choices that people voted on what they would like to see incorporated in the Schonsee Park and Playground Phase 2.

  • 1. Spray Deck
  • 2. Basketball Court with Street Hockey option
  • 3. More Picnic Tables / Benches
  • 4. More Bike Racks

From the two community surveys’s, the original survey in 2013/2014 and the most recent one in July 2018 have both identified a strong need to build a spray pad and a multi activity court space for basketball, street hockey and community events. The plan will also include additional amenities such as bike racks.

Out of Scope is the development of a community league hall and a skating rink. Our neighborhood is part of Lago Lindo Community League and they have a large hall and skating rinks for our neighborhood to use.
